Peshawar, the magnificent ancient city, plays a vital role in portraying the traditional art and craft of Pakistan. It is widely popular for its hand-knotted rugs/Kilims using pure hand-spun wool. It is also believed that the Mughal period was the greatest time in the history of the Peshawar region. The Mughal rulers were very much interested in the development of art and craft therefore, in the 16th century, the Mughal ruler Akbar established rug weaving workshops in Peshawar and ordered the local weavers to get inspiration from the Persian artisan, and hence the patterns of the rugs started getting influence from ancient Persian motifs. The traditional Peshawari Kilims are beautifully hand-woven by the talented artisans of Peshawar. The colors used in the Kilims are normally warm, resultant of sun-dried vegetable dyes, which makes the Kilims very unique. Moreover, the Kilims are very durable, reliable, soft, and luxurious.
